TEHRAN — The CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Behzad Muhammadi said on Saturday that the GTPP unit of West Islamabad project would come online by 2024 as the first development project of the National Petrochemical Company after privatization.
According to the National Petrochemical Company, Behzad Muhammadi said on Saturday: “This project is the first national project in the petrochemical industry whose chain develops from natural gas to propylene and polypropylene.”
“GTPP project is defined in three stages; first we will move from natural gas to methanol and from this route to propylene and finally to polypropylene production,” he explained.
During a visit to the facility, he said that the Islamabad-e-Gharb project is the first project that is being developed after privatization of the petrochemical industry by the National Petrochemical Compan. The NPC CEO said the plant is financed by $545 million, and adding: “The technical knowhow of this project has been developed for many years with the efforts of Iranian researchers in the Petrochemical Research and Technology Company (PRTC) and it is predicted that its operational process will accelerate and become productive by 2024.”
Muhammadi reminded: “One of the factors that has caused the country’s petrochemical industry to be unsuccessful in developing propylene production plans is the lack of technical savvy for production of this strategic item which need a million tons per year.”
The CEO of the National Petrochemical Company stated: “Currently, licenses have been issued for construction of some GTPP or GTP projects that produce not only propylene but also propylene derivatives. We hope to be able to supply 4 million tons of propylene by 2025 by developing these projects.”

The natural gas feedstock containing various impurities must be de-sulphurized before being further processed, since Sulphur and its compounds are harmful to the reforming and methanol synthesis catalyst.
The feedstock flow will be automatically cut-down if its Sulphur content appears to be beyond the acceptable limit.
The preheated feedstock is reformed with steam over nickel catalyst to produce a gas mixture mainly consisting of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and a little methane. The reformed gas, after cooling and condensation of residual process steam, is used as synthesis gas for methanol production.
The synthesis gas is compressed to the methanol loop pressure and after being mixed with recycle gas, preheated up to the required reaction temperature. The gas is partly converted to methanol by means of a copper based catalyst. After being cooled down, the condensed raw methanol is separated from unconverted recycle gas.
Raw methanol contains dissolved gases and small quantities of undesired but unavoidable by-products. Therefore it has to be purified by means of the distillation unit.
PVM Unit (Propylene via Methanol)
This process description follows and describes the flow of reaction and product separation and purification, thus giving an overview of the PVM process. The PVM plant design comprises of six Process Units, which are Reaction Section , Reactor Regeneration , Gas Separation , Hydrocarbon Compressing and Drying , Purification .
In addition, Feed and Storage , Utilities system and Flare System .
The methanol feed for the Methanol to Propylene plant is supplied from Battery Limit. The products of the PVM Unit are passing Battery Limit to storage in OSBL.
The PVM process is based on a fixed-bed adiabatic reactor system. In Reaction Section the feed methanol reacts to DME in the DME Reactor. The DME Reactor product is selectively converted to propylene in the presence of steam using a 6 stage PVM Reactor. Besides the main product propylene, by-products from the process are ethylene, a high-RON PVM-Gasoline and PVM-LPG. The PVM reaction operates at a slightly elevated pressure and at low temperatures .
Because of the low coking tendency of the catalyst, simple discontinuous in-situ catalyst regeneration by coke burning is sufficient. The gas used for regeneration is a mixture of nitrogen and air. The regeneration gas is provided by Unit Regeneration.
The process steam used in the PVM Reactor and the reaction water generated in the DME Reactor and the PVM Reactor is separated from the PVM Reactor product in the Pre Quench and Quench Columns of Unit Gas Separation. The process water is partially recycled as steam to the PVM Reactor. Recovered Methanol and DME from the Purification Unit and methanol contained in the excess process water are separated in the MeOH Recovery Column and recycled to the DME Reactor.
After separation of the water from the PVM Reactor product, the remaining hydrocarbon gas is sent to Unit Hydrocarbon Compressing. There the gas is pressurized and dried, so that it can be purified in columns using cooling water, propylene and ethylene as refrigerant for condensing the overhead.
In Unit Purification the different products are separated and purified in several separation columns. The compressed hydrocarbons are separated into the products propylene, PVM-LPG, PVM-Gasoline and hydrocarbon recycle streams, which are recycled to the PVM Reactor.
Tanks for storage of feed and products are combined in Unit Feed and Product Storage.
Steam import, generation and distribution on different pressure levels as well as condensate collection are assorted in Unit Steam & Condensate System. Thid includes demineralized water polishing (PU) and BFW drum with deaerator to produce BFW for HHP Steam Generation (PU).
The Unit Propylene Refrigerant System PU includes the propylene cycle to supply cooling medium at temperatures below the cooling water temperature.
In Unit nitrogen, Instrument air and Plant air system.
Two basins for collection of oily water and sanitary water are combined in Unit Waste Water System.
